"The White Ribbon: A German Children's Story."
Das weisse Band: Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte
The White Ribbon which won the best picture in Cannes 2009 is written & directed Michael Haneke. The movie is shot in black and white to show the colours of world war I. The movie is about Nazism. The movie portraits a small village in Germany just before the world war I happens. The small mysterious happenings in the village carries the movie along and at last the war arrives as if the consequences of the dark will of the people. Most of the population of Eichwald depends upon agriculture for living and most of them work for the Baron (Ulrich Tukur). Protestant pastor (Burghart Klaussner) in the village has a strong influence on children of the village. Mysterious things in the village include the local doctor (Rainer Bock) is seriously injured when his horse stumbles over a rope that was tied on the way betwen two trees as a trap. Then a farm workers wife dies as she falls through the Baron’s faulty barn loft floor. The
womans son blames Baron for the death and takes revenge by slashing Barons cabbage crop. Later Barons son is beaten and hung upside down in Barons barn by somebody.A little boy finds out abouyt death of her mother from his grandmother. A lady complaints of the music not catching up with her singing. The Pastor brutally punishes children for misbehaving severly in relegious ways. All these small incidences joined together perfectly to show the village as dark and dull as possible. The only delight moment of the village is the romance betwen pudding-faced young school teacher (Christian Friedel) and 17-year-old Eva (Leonie Benesch), who works as a nanny at the Baron’s estate. Their romance is blossoming even in the midst of these mishaps. As the harvest season finishes the war is arrived. Now the villagers are in a change with the physical realities of time and they no longer trust each other. As a result child abuse, malicious behavior, adultery and premature death are comes as bonus to the villagers. The only life who is not affected by these stigmas is the school teacher who narrates the entore story.
